Yeah the original Mass Effect is far more 'classic RPG' oriented, ME2 went for a more action heavy experience, at the detriment to these elements.
I like both sides of the coin to be honest, I know some people moaned about ME2's lack of inventory and such but I enjoyed the combat/gameplay in both games. The core of Mass Effect is it's story, and neither game damaged that in my opinion.
I hated the mass effect loot system. EVERYTHING you got was junk. apart from the odd item. you spent most of the game inside your inventory creating omni-gel. However The inventory system in mass effect 2 wasn't enough
the weapon effects were awesome, but a few more weapons and even weapon upgrades would have been great

Here's a good blog from ME3 developer http://blog.bioware.com/2012/02/28/me3romances/
Starting to get excited about it now, will have to smash through ME1 (and 2 again!) quickly although I started on a harder difficulty level and have died quite a few times so far!
YOu should get the DLC, just completed the shadow broker. It was amazeballs
