I think euthanasia needs to be legal, but to give doctors that amount of privacy would have let murderers like Dr Harold Shipman get away with many more killings. Just as families can opt to "pull the plug" on life support machines, if a person still has cognitive thought, they should be able to end their life. I don't even think there should be a quantifier for an "unreasonable amount of pain". I think people should be able to kill themselves if they feel no pain at all; it is their life, the government has no right to control it.
It should also be noted that some people who are "locked in" feel no pain; they are just incapable of doing anything themselves. I don't know about you, but if I was in that situation I'd probably want to off myself as well.
