What should I say?
December 13, 2012 at 2:18 am
Hi.
I'm an atheist, and I can't lie about it anymore. While I wouldn't go shout, "I don't believe in God," I most certainly will say my beliefs (or lack thereof) when asked. So, can anyone list me the most common Christian defenses and the most appropriate atheist reasoning for each defense? I almost got into a debate with my classmate today, but I got speechless when I can't tell her how blind she is when she said, "Just look around you. Isn't that enough proof?" I know--meaningless. Fortunately, I didn't loose her.
I do not like debates, and would prefer my belief to be left alone. However, I'd like to be prepared, as I would like to be able to at least defend my atheism, as they are able to defend their Christianism with such meaningless thoughts.
Thanks, everybody. You all rock

Spend just a little time on this site every day and you will have more replies than you'll know what to do with.
Regarding your immediate question: Reply with the words deus ex machina and/or argument from incredulity and then tell them to go look it up and get back to you.
This of course is just the tip of the ice berg. Cheers.

Can you please suggest the category? As in, should I hang out in the Atheism forums, or the Christianism forums?

Just don't try Min's replies.

Here's some food for thought - most people prefer that you leave their beliefs alone. The reason is, most of them haven't examined those beliefs and their logical consequences thoroughly and they are unwilling to examine them lest they find it to be a house of cards about to come tumbling down. This is also the reason why many theists continue to use the same arguments over and over again even if they have been proven to be wrong.
In my experience, any casual debate can be shut down pretty easily by pointing out the most obvious and glaring flaws in their belief system. Anyone arguing with you is trying to convince you of a certain viewpoint and if you simply punch a few holes in it, you just need to sit back and watch them fall over themselves trying to plug them up. Educate yourself with the commonly used logical fallacies and criticisms of their position and that should end the discussion pretty quickly.
Oh, and try to make as much fun of their beliefs as possible. No Christian would try to debate you if you keep on referring to their god as the "Virgin fucker".

It looks like everyone knows everybody here. I still have to know who Min is, and I'd be glad to. Religious country = no athiest friends to talk with, but at least, my best friend knows I'm an atheist and is fine with it. He's not atheist, by the way.
This forum feels great. I'm glad I registered! I hope I'm welcome here

 Tars
Yes this forum IS great and we have enough resident Theists to keep it lively.
Check out all posts by Minimalist and like his name replies with minimal text, often crude rude and offensive but straight to the point with no bells and whistles.
Personally I love his contributions to any thread = always entertaining.

I thought I wouldn't hear these words outside of myself.

I haven't got into debates much, but now that I made the decision that I won't lie about myself from now on, these will be really handy. Like I said, I wouldn't convince people to be atheists by debating, but I'd be glad to "punch a few holes" to defend atheism if I have to.

I'd LOVE to say that, but what if they do not accept me as I am and ignore me/look at me dirty?
Gee. I sound like some gay who just came out of the closet. At least, gays are quite accepted here. They're not treated differently. The thing is I'm not gay--I'm atheist, and that's in no way accepted by most

Why do you have to respond to anything? If they're the ones who want to convince you of something, the burden of proof should be on them. Until that proof is met, disbelief is a reasonable response.
