If 0.999(etc) = 1, does 1 - 0.999 go to zero?

Check out ViHart on YouTube. She's got a couple of videos about this. She explains it really well.

What do you mean "go to zero"? It doesn't "go" anywhere; it's not a sequence that gradually approaches something. 1 - 0.999... is equal to 0.

Where does 2 - 1.999... go? People are way too attached to a base system.

That's the same base system...

Did you mean to say 2 - 1.222... in base 3?

Isn't this all about rounding the numbers?

Oh man, what was I thinking replying in a mathematics thread?

"goes to" is blatantly meant to mean equals. Math fail.

X.999(etc) is an integer, not a fraction, but expressed algebraically as if it were a fraction. 0.333(etc) is exactly equal to 1/3, thus 0.666(etc) is exactly equal to (2/3), etc.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

Another way to express this is like this:

0.111(etc) is exactly equal to 1/9.
0.222(etc) is exactly equal to 2/9.
0.333(etc) is exactly equal to 1/3.
0.444(etc) is exactly equal to 4/9.
0.555(etc) is exactly equal to 5/9.
0.666(etc) is exactly equal to 2/3.
0.777(etc) is exactly equal to 7/9.
0.888(etc) is exactly equal to 8/9.
0.999(etc) is exactly equal to 9/9.
