A question

A question
When someone says to you in a discussion where you have a difference of opinion and the person says 'Well...God bless you.' knowing full well you are an atheist, is that like saying 'Well...fuck you.' in a nice way? It's a bit offensive to me. Maybe not 'fuck you', but I feel it's being disrespectful when it's thrown out there in conversation knowing my point of view. Just wondering if anyone else feels the same.

RE: A question
It does come over to me as a bit condescending. Certainly insensitive. It'd do the person good to have a blast of reality IMO.

Agreed. Not all the time, but sometimes it's a bitchy last word thing.

RE: A question
The one that really gets me is "I'll pray for you." I once actually came out with: "Please don't. I know it can't have any effect but it's so degrading for you, grovelling to a mythical totem-pole".
To be fair, she ended it on a friendly note by blowing a monster raspberry.

RE: A question
It's absolutely a fuck you. Not only that, but it's a way for them to feel that they know better. As in, "Oh, they'll come around and stop going through the atheist phase of their life, it just takes a little prayer."

It's always offensive when someone presumes to know you better then you know yourself.

I wouldn't say "always"... I'm sure it is to many.

Okay, I'll give you that. Perhaps I should not have used the word always.

But, it can be offensive a lot of the time.

I apologise if I seemed pedantic.

Not at all. When people use the word always in front of a statement it annoys me, I should not have done it here. I despise hypocrisy, especially in myself.

It's all well and good. You brought up a very good point.

Oh, that's alright then Smile

I especially despise hypocrisy when it's in myself too.
