RE: So I guess the .com is down again...
LOL!
$1,000... not worth it.
Keep the .org, tib...
And the dumb guy "stopped" backing up years ago...

Tib, how are your backups?

Every morning (when the forums are least active) the database gets backed up, zipped up, and sent to an external backup server (also stored locally, but that doesn't help if the hard drive crashes).

I keep the last 30 days of backups on the external backup server, and 90 days locally (the local server has way more space).

Also, every week the actual forum files are backed up (using the same process). The files don't change that often, hence why they aren't backed up every day.

I also back up all the server configuration files on a weekly basis too. The idea is, if the hard drive does become corrupted, I can install everything and just use the backed up config files, which saves a heck of a lot of time.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the last database backup file was 140MB...compressed with the highest compression in 7zip. Tongue I don't want to know what size it extracts to...

Edit: Apparently he tried to contact me but I didn't receive anything. I've sent him a message on Facebook to see if he wants to do a deal on it. It's not looking good for AF.com admins who want to preserve the site though:

Rut row. That's not sounding good.

Tiberius, if you can come to some sort of deal with him, I'll kick in some $.

Several gigs, I would guess.

So... that raises the question - how long has it been since you tested your restore procedures? Last server upgrade? Big Grin

I think given how stuff went down over there, I may to a simulation this weekend with a VM.

Yikes, I've got 13,000+ posts over there. And that community was like a nice place to hang out. I'll miss it if it goes down.

Good idea. I once worked someplace that dutifully backed up a particular server nightly, did a proper tape rotation, and sent backup sets offsite. They did everything that they should, except test the tapes (and apparently, scrutinize the logs).

Some time later, there was some filesystem reorganization, and later later, there was a need to restore something from backup.

The backups were useless, because during the reorg, a filesystem was added that wasn't added to the backup schedule - the filesystem that held the files that needed to be restored - which had never been backed up.

I'm pretty sure we're OK - but it never hurts to verify every once in awhile.

Welcome, newcomer.

A special attack? On calm blissey?

There was a time when there were a heck of a lot of competitive pokemon players... wonder how old Pokemon Online is doing. Do I dare the climb back up to >1400 again? They've gone and sent stuff like exadrill and garchomp to ubers (what utter fucking wimps), so I've lost two dangerous checks to my preferred strategies (ever seen what a quiver dance does for Hydreigon?), and down that specific stealth rock-using sweeper: I might be able to use a few more spinners.

Wonder if latios is still around with a good old draco meteor Thinking Thundurus was fun to fight against too. Bet they went the way of drizzle-swift swim (can't deal with a 200%speed kingdra and kabutops? Really? I guess stockpile quagsire doesn't exist).

* Violet stops rambling. Maybe she should take a serious look at the game again since B/W2. From the looks of it, there's only scarf terrakion and heatran left for volcarona Thinking
