do you believe in the concept of souls?

as an atheist i dont believe in souls in the same terms christians do. but i do believe we are souls, and that it is not a separate entity but apart of us. when we die, it dies with us.

As with every supernatural claim, there is no evidence to back up the assertion that a 'soul exists' aside anecdote and 'faith' in one.

As such, the claim that it exists can be rejected.

I hate the phrase, "I believe...". Most of the time the statement contains a fallacy of some sort or is woo-based.

No. The soul is just what they called your consciousness before anyone had a fucking clue what was going on. These people thought the brain was useless and the heart was for thinking and shit.

If you call the "soul" my special wiring of neurons that gives rise to my character, my inner experiences and my psyche, then yes, of course there are souls, it's one of the few things one can be certain of.

But the word "soul" is really a hot potatoe, better call it something else, too much Christian cow manure attached.

Not in the Christian sense, no. But I do think there is something about the unconscious which is not subservient to my conscious druthers and which has had some role in determining which of my many enviromental influences have conspired to make me me. "Soul" will do, but hold the immortal part. This is strictly an embodied thing, same as mind.
