Boy, I really do hate these guys. You’ve got a discussion going, talking about why you’re an atheist, or what atheism should mean to the community, or some such topic that is dealing with our ideas and society, and some smug wanker comes along and announces that “Atheism means you lack a belief in gods. Nothing more. Quit trying to add meaning to the term.” As if atheism can only be some platonic ideal floating in virtual space with no connections to anything else; as if atheists are people who have attained a zen-like ideal, their minds a void, containing nothing but atheism, which itself is nothing. Dumbasses.

That's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard an atheist say about atheism.

Does he not own a dictionary? Atheism has no dogma, no rules or guidelines. It is a statement of "there is no god." Are you sure he's smart?

He's a biology professor. People accuse Dawkins of needing to stick with science and not atheism. This accusation actually should be put on PZ.

Indeed - that is in fact all that you can say about atheism. Atheists, on the other hand, can hold a number of varied views, but those fall under a different banner.

While I have doubts that the OP is in fact Ray Comfort (along with many of my cohorts here), for the purposes of this post, I'm going to set those doubts aside.

Ray, welcome to AF. I sincerely hope that you'll stick around and share your views and wisdom with us. Surely us atheists could use some enlightenment.
