One thing that makes you doubt your own world view?
July 13, 2013 at 5:29 pm
This is a question to all people of any beliefs (theists, deists, polytheists, atheists, agnostics, etc). What one thing (could be anything such as a fact of nature, a philosophical dilemma, an experience etc.) makes you question the truthfulness of your own worldview the most? In other words, what's something makes you go "maybe I'm wrong about everything"?
Also, how do you explain away such a thing (assuming you have done so already) in your mind so you can comfortably still hold your worldview?
To me, the problem of consciousness seems to pose a problem to my naturalistic/atheistic worldview. The idea of being able to experience reality completely baffles me and makes me want to explore a supernatural explanation but when I think about it further, appealing to the supernatural to explain consciousness does not seem to explain it any better than a natural one. For now, I just put it my ever growing "I don't know" box and continue on.
What about you?

My "world view" is that the world is completely fucked up and nothing I have seen lately has caused me to doubt that.

At the moment my life revolves around getting sex and staying in shape, so probably if I lost a limb or got aids, sometimes I think there's more to life anyway without loosing my limbs or getting aids I feel I should just pack up my bags go to a poor country and help them build huts or something and it would give me more satisfaction but I suppose I'm just too comfortable.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.

That is a toughie, and it depends on which aspect of my worldview, because I can't think of any off the top of my head that causes me to doubt my entire worldview.
If I had to stick with metaphysical naturalism, I suppose consciousness is among the few things that might do so, though considering no one actually understands what it really is, it doesn't seem that it supports any worldview.

Well, I don't understand it - and no one else seems to either - so in my case I don't need to explain it away. But with regard to other people, they might not need to explain it away. If there really is only one thing that causes doubt for a worldview, but a plethora of other supporting evidence for that view, I think most people would stick to their current one.

Well, how would a supernatural explanation be any help at all? But yeah, it just seems to necessitate being relegated to "I don't know" for the time being.

I could be wrong about everything. But why waste time worrying about it? I arrived at the best conclusion I possibly can. There's no more pondering on it, nowhere to go. I've reached my conclusion and there's no point in sitting here and saying, "I could be wrong," if I don't know the true right answer. I could only go backwards from here. There's nothing to controdict my worldview directly.

Same point as before: if I can't further my worldview because there's nothing to indicate there's anything past my current worldview, then why waste time wondering if I'm wrong? The only thing I could be wrong about is the existence of God and an afterlife. Of course I could be wrong about that, but I've reached the most sound conclusion possible and there's nothing left to expand on therefore it's a waste of time to tell myself I could be wrong.

I agree, to an extent. I'm checking the "I'm pretty sure from what I know that I'm right but nobody will ever truly know and I accept that" box.
Now, with all that said...Fight Club fucked with my mind a bit.

I constantly question my worldview.
In my opinion it is the only right way to form an opinion.
