Becoming an atheist meant that I no longer had to concern myself with "leaders" and "movements" in that context. No wonder so many theists assume that atheism is just another religion. Perhaps there are too many atheists who try to act as if it is.

If he's claiming it was rape, I'm more concerned that he describes it as "unethical behavior." In most places it's considered a serious crime. If it's true that a person has done this to at least six people, he is a serial rapist and charges could be brought against him that would carry a life sentence. These women should be talking with a DA, not sending anonymous letters to internet bloggers.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Ok, I think I need to clarify. I had quote unquote there for a reason, I don't really think they're leaders. I only heard of Dawkins from a theist friend who thought I'd like him. As it turned out, I did.

I didn't mean to imply that you were supporting the idea, just commenting on the idea in general. It does seem as if many people consider atheism to be some kind of organized movement with leaders and communities. I can see why atheists would seek each other out when we're in a world that still has a significant population of theists and still suffers under the effects of their beliefs and belief systems. I am just wary of ever becoming part of the church of atheism.

A previous post of his involves an acquaintance of mine, and he paints him as the guilty party based on nothing but an allegation.

I came here after reading the low hanging drama fruit on Reddit.

Interesting to see the responses.

PZ has been feuding with Shermer for a while for who knows fuck reasons.

It seems more like a hit piece sans anything that can make it stand up to scrutiny with a fair amount of moral crusader smugness.

Al Stefanelli contributed his own opinion on the actions of PZ Myers. In the comments section, there's a pingback to Ophelia Benson's page on FtB. Read the comments there and try to hold onto your sanity. Especially when you get to "hoary puccoon" who concludes that Al Stefanelli must surely be a sexual predator, too.

Ugh...I can't read anymore of this, because I already have a low opinion of humanity as a whole as it is. If I continue listening to idiotic opinions on this issue, I may just have to advocate the extinction of the human race.

The guy they're criticising is advocating common sense.

Ok, so they're all aboard the PZ ass licking train. Whatever, they react angry when someone even thinks of critiquing PZ. However, they let that seemingly irrational dislike cloud their judgement when it comes to the actual content of the message, ie, that its a legal issue that someone didnt want known which was then suddenly brought into the public domain by someone who wanted (seemingly) to throw a grenade out there and get attention.

Is all this a joke? Is PZ actually Dennis Markuze? (LOL, image that...)

RE: Free(from)ThoughtBlogs
I became aware of Myers about 10-12 years ago and, at the time, enjoyed watching him eviscerate creationists, but even then he seemed to me like a bit of a prick. I haven't really paid much attention to him since. Naturally, I don't have an opinion about these allegations. How could I, given the questionable manner in which they've been brought to light?

I don't know the source of contention between Shermer and Myers and don't really care. These are not "leaders" to me in any sense; they are merely two among many people whose atheism I share. I wonder, though, whether Myers has let his relatively high profile within the so-called atheist community go to his head?

After all, if not for that, he would just be an esteemed (but obscure) professor of developmental biology at a satellite campus of the University of Minnesota. And how sexy an ego-stroke would that be?
