I'm surprised it took Shermer this long, frankly.

Reading through the comments on this issue on Pharyngula (I know, I know) is really frustrating: it's amazing how many of those guys have leaped immediately to "he's guilty, this cease and desist is a free speech violation, and we should wreak vengeance by reposting this shit everywhere."

It didn't take him this long. His lawyers had been keeping a track of everything that was happening... including capturing screengrabs of PZ Myers' posts before he had a chance to edit them to take out someone's name.

They gathered their evidence, and then they sent the letter.

You must be made of sterner stuff than I, because just the few comments I have skimmed on this issue have made me want to slit my wrists. Especially when you consider that many of these people are attempting to speak for atheists as a whole.

Something that I created a while back (when the whole A+ thing kicked off) but still applies now. Non-A+ atheists were supposedly A* (because an asterisk looks like a butt-hole).

I love the "Freedom of speech!" trope in the cached page.

No, freedom of speech does not give you the right to slander and libel, anymore than it does not give you the right to yell "fire!" In a crowded theatre.

All this reeks is of "I'm free to say anything about you and represent it as truth and you have to take it"
