TBH I would love to see non profit private schools more abundant than public schools.

Quote: non profit

That's the lie.

Quote:There's big money to be made educating poor kids.

At least three charter school executives raked in more than city Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, public records show.

Four other charter officials were sitting pretty with more than $200,000 - a higher salary than all but one of Klein's deputies.

I agree and outrageous college debt is one of those things that has been growing the gap between upper and middle class.

RE: Fixing Education
The sole purpose of education should be to create individuals that are beneficial to society. That is, even if the student does not go to university, as not every person is destined to be a person of higher education, you should be sure that they will live out their lives as healthy, productive individuals that will aid in the formation of healthy families that will continue the cycle.
Schools should be the spearhead of social engineering.
Pupils should be evalutated by psychologists in where their interests and their abilities lie, and should be directed towards that goal.
In short, education should be leaned towards teaching students to be a part of a body, which is the nation, of which some will be the part of an arm, some a leg, some, the brains.

mehmet, I'm of the thought that schools give students the opportunity to be what they want to be as adults and functioning members of society, not a way for others to engineer students for their own agenda (psychologists telling students what they should be).

Well, its not "telling", its "suggesting".
Of course, if a student is determined that he/she is not content with what an advisor suggests, he/she can choose another path. Obviously you can't analyze everyone correctly. För example, parents are usually the worst in seeing talent in their children. My aunt sent my cousin to study something like visual design, however I think that he could have been a great engineer, or something along those lines, as he was very smart, yet very lazy, so his parents thought that it would be a great idea to send him to study something in which he'd input as little work as possible.

I actually like one thing about the American education system. Being active and good in sports is actively rewarded! They get scholarships in universities.
In Turkey, people who do sports as in a professional sense, are generally not rewarded well, and are seldomly noticed early for their athletic abilities. If our schools would promote sports actively, as making it a requirement for a student to pursue a sport from the beginning of school in the elementary stage to highschool, we would be able to notice able athletes and sportspeople earlier, and make use of their abilities much better.
Though as a people, our athletic abilities are generally limited to martial sports and things like football(not american football). Still, even if we're not able to produce worldwide known athletes of every fucking kind, we should be able to pride ourselves on at least three distinguished areas, and I know we could, if we were to recognize able athletes from an early age.

Pupils should be evaluated by Opthamologists. Students should be guided by guidance counselors. Just saying.
