A Texas teen was arrested after police say a boy she was babysitting shot and killed himself with her gun while she took a nap.

Melissa Ann Ringhardt, 19, was charged Tuesday in the death of 5-year-old John Read, The Orange Leader reports. Ringhardt lives in Vidor with the boy's family, who left him and a 6-month-old child in her care Monday afternoon, according to NBC News.

Orange County deputies say the teen put her semiautomatic .40-caliber handgun on a coffee table before going to take a nap. When she awoke, she found the 5-year-old lying on the floor in the living room with a gunshot wound to the head.

I suppose we can all agree that this was an irresponsible gun owner.

Great Question. If the criminal with the gun is in fact threatening to do mortal harm to myself or others, then yes indeed I would shoot first to prevent the criminal from continuing with their plan. I would do what any cop (I'm not in law enforcement) in this situation would, and I would not only be legally justified in doing so, I'd also be a hero.

First off - I would wait for a clear shot. If I didn't have one I would not fire. I would not risk endangering innocent bystanders just to play cowboy. And yes, I'm pretty accurate with most firearm configurations - especially my 1911 (it's a .45 cal. acp) which I almost always carry.

Shooting in a crowd is almost never the right answer. You may think you are "highly trained".... so were these cops.
