It had lovely visuals, but the story was pretty rubbish... not that it had much of a story.

The truth is that trailer is so right, is so dumb but so awesome. Just don't think about it.

It's one of my favorite movies, just because of that fact.
It is a film that's says Screw logic and physics, it looks cool.

Pretty much this. Action films are tough to enjoy if you're trying to make sense of the story or plot. Much easier to enjoy if you're just sitting there going "oooh, explosion..."
My dad took me to see
Godzilla versus Megalon back in 1976 or 1977 or thereabouts. It was the one where Godzilla and his robot buddy fight giant monsters. It was corny as hell, but to an eight-year-old it was pure monster-movie heaven. Pacific Rim brought back some of that. I enjoyed it immensely.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
-Stephen Jay Gould
