Is there a free alternative to Photoshop?

So my parents got me a DSLR camera for Christmas (My Dad is a camera nut and wants to get me into a common hobby since I suck at golf) a Cannon EOS1100D anyway I like it but I need something like Photoshop but being a PhD student I can't afford the €760 cost of it!!!

Adobe released photoshop CS2 as freeware a few months ago:

It's not the latest and greatest photoshop, but it gets most of the jobs done.

GIMP or CS2 for sure. Gimp is set-up a bit differently, but has mostly the same functions as photoshop. But any photoshop has a more professional interface and is a bit more appealing to work on.

I highly doubt most of the people who downloaded this have a license

ok, yes.. technically, it's not freeware.... it's just freely available.
