Your funeral songs

Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.
Because I have a lot of haters, I'm holding my funeral on National Brother Week, when everyone is supposed to get along. This will be the song:
Everything I needed to know about life I learned on Dagobah.
My atheist mother wanted this one played at her funeral and I think I'd want the same.
She had no idea what the words mean, neither do I and who cares. it was the feeling of a peaceful farewell contained in the music itself.
Atheist Forums Hall of Shame:
"The trinity can be equated to having your cake and eating it too." ... -Lucent, trying to defend the Trinity concept "(Yahweh's) actions are good because (Yahweh) is the ultimate standard of goodness. That’s not begging the question" ... -Statler Waldorf, Christian apologist
Hmmmm. This is a hard one. It's fun to plan my funeral, but it's so easy to overplan it. What if noone comes? I'm not exactly Mr. Social in my neck of the woods. I have an easier time thinking about soundtracks to my autobiographical movie (which could be another thread, if someone wants to have at that).
My favorite song seems to change every 3 months, and is usually not appropriate for funerals. Right now, it's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fENVQJGc18 Arcade Fire - "Hey Orpheus". Most funereal music I like is instrumental, by drone projects like Stars of the Lid. Here's "Requiem for Dying Mothers, part II". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ7CU9QIHAA For something more upbeat (and with lyrics), maybe "I Am The One and Only", by Chesney Hawkes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8f2mW1GFSI
"For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan
Seriously, I'd choose "We'll All Be Gone" by Marti Jones. It's a beautiful, mournful plaint. But no youtube video.

I think there always needs to be some kind of sad element to a funeral, if even for a moment. I'd want this playing as they put me in the oven:

'The more I learn about people the more I like my dog'- Mark Twain
'You can have all the faith you want in spirits, and the afterlife, and heaven and hell, but when it comes to this world, don't be an idiot. Cause you can tell me you put your faith in God to put you through the day, but when it comes time to cross the road, I know you look both ways.' - Dr House “Young earth creationism is essentially the position that all of modern science, 90% of living scientists and 98% of living biologists, all major university biology departments, every major science journal, the American Academy of Sciences, and every major science organization in the world, are all wrong regarding the origins and development of life….but one particular tribe of uneducated, bronze aged, goat herders got it exactly right.” - Chuck Easttom "If my good friend Doctor Gasparri speaks badly of my mother, he can expect to get punched.....You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others. There is a limit." - Pope Francis on freedom of speech
Given to fly....Pearl Jam.
"And sometimes you"ll see a strange spot in the sky.... A human being, given to fly...." ![]() If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71. |
