Ok I admit it

I trust mine, too. That doesn't mean I think they're always right, or that I never disagree with them. Part of growing up is realizing that your parents are just people like you, and as such they're collections of good things and bad things. I trust my dad, but I also recognize that he can be a total moron about certain things.

Just consider the possibility that they might be wrong on this one issue. Once you do, the evidence will align and show you what's really true.

The thing is this isn't just a small thing, religion is their LIFE. A number of years ago I asked my mom if she loved me or Jesus more and she said "Jesus, just by a little bit!"

Then tell us all about this special book which you haven't even read yet.

They just try and twist the Bible's words. You have to read the whole thing in context.

So you're just going to condemn it without even reading it?

Then good luck with your close minded little life inside the little box of ignorance that you have made for yourself.

I'm done here, this person is just too stupid.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this but your mother is a lunatic.

Okay, so they're wrong about something they really, really care about. Investment tends to breed additional investment, that's not crazy or anything; people will rationalize away contradictions in the things they've believed for a long time.

But anyway, it's not about what they believe, it's about what you do. What do you want, here: do you want to believe something because it's true, or because someone close to you is really invested in it?

If your parents were as convinced of the idea that drinking battery acid is the path to perfect health, would you play along with that too, or would you accept the evidence that the opposite is true?

The truth isnt always nice but it's not as assholish (is that a word?) as telling your children they mean less to you than Jesus.

And I suppose this is an example of the outstanding family values I keep hearing Christians going on about.

But so many other people, including like everyone I know, agrees with them. And Christianity seems to do nothing but good for them.

As an Abrahamic religion... they're following their leader to the tee.

I asked a couple years later and she said she was wrong, that their love for me and their love for Jesus were different realms so they couldn't be compared.

Popularity doesn't determine reality, though. Like, okay, example: I just posted a link in another thread today to a pair of christian parents who just went to jail because they didn't get their child medical care, and the kid died of rickets. To take him to a doctor would be a sin, they said. This kind of thing isn't that rare, either.

For starters, has christianity done any good for that poor kid? Or any of the other kids that die or get hurt because of this? You know, statistically, fundamentalist religion is correlated with higher rates of child and spousal abuse, has christianity done any good there?

But more importantly, what if your parents and everyone you knew was that kind of christian? What if they were slowly killing themselves, or you, because to get you medical attention would be a sin? Would you place their faith above the well being and lives of the people around you?
