That is why I left Christianity. Because I no longer could continue making excuses for what I knew it stood for.

I know where you are coming from, and I understand. I sort of took this position, but, when I saw verses explaining other verses and the conclusion you must come up with if you don't want the Quran contradicting itself, then these verses don't seem to be problematic but it was rather in a narrow interpretation we had without keeping our minds open.

You seem to think interpretation against classical view would be going against what it explicitly states, but I think often, classical views are going against what Quran explicitly states and are following scholars instead.

"Keeping our minds open"? I think you've completely failed to grasp what that means if you've actually closed off other avenues of thought, disregarding all contrary evidence, just to accept the very narrow road that is Islam.

I see. It isn't for me to judge you, and I can see your faith at least, means something to you, for you are hospitable to everyone here, from what I've seen. To me, if someone wishes to follow any religion, it should edify their lives. It shouldn't be just a label they wear, and a measuring stick to judge others with. (which we sadly see a lot of)

I have a few Muslim friends (offline), and they too seem at peace with their faith. They were raised in it, so have been devout all of their lives.

I believe religion does more harm than good, to individuals, not just to society as a whole, but it is your choice, and your life. I hope you are happy, whatever you choose.

Faith, the desire to believe in a deity without evidence, will never be about evidence.

MK, roughly what percentage of the Quran have you had to disregard in order to satisfy your personal interpretation? Why are the words in the Quran so much more important than those of today's leading scholars and scientists? If a contradiction arises, are you going to defer to the Quran first or will you look at the evidence presented by, say, a historian or doctor?

Sorry but the bottom line is you believe god was sitting there thinking of the best way to communicate with humanity and warn them and the answer was to tell a shepard in ancient times to recite a book in arabic.

Then for that message to get re interpreted and re translated over and over to the point where some of the followers are peaceful and some are literally hacking people to death in the streets with machetes while quoting quran verses.

And it gets to me when people say things like "well I guess god would be peaceful and wise and would do this and " How do you know what god would be like?
I've heard a woman say she converted to Islam because of reasons of feminism, not only do I think the foundation of the statement is fucking stupid but how does she know god wants women to be treated with any respect anyway?
Why does some average tom dick or harry think the almighty vastly immensely powerful creator of the universe god would conform to their views on what they think is quite nice?

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I agree that religion does more harm then good. This is one reason why I think God should intervene and try to remind us at the core we all (atheists included) are upon the true religion which is the human nature with exception of some people who leave it. At the same time, with justice and wisdom, as key things we should want to follow, he would not leave the blessed exalted human beings alone but make them the connection between him and us, and the way of establishing justice and wisdom.

I hope none.

Quote:Why are the words in the Quran so much more important than those of today's leading scholars and scientists?

God's words are more important to me but I'm not going to say Quran should take priority over what scholars and scientists have to say. Perhaps God wants society to have science as a priority in this day and age. I don't know. But at the very least, Quran is important to me.

You'll have to explain this one to me.
