How smart are birds?

Have researchers explored the possibility that cognition isn't solely centered in the brain? I'm not suggesting anything spiritual, but there are a number of other plexuses and ganglia around the body. I realize that in people, the brain is at least the primary source of self awareness as evidenced by what happens when it is damaged/drugged. But is that the case in other animals? The description of dinosaurs as stupid (brain the size of a walnut yada, yada) could be ill conceived if they processed or pre-processed information elsewhere.
It would bring a whole new meaning to, "thinking with your gut."

Yes birds are very smart.. Noah sent a bird to see if the flood waters were gone... the bird came back and said "yes" the ground is dry... STUPID ASS! and the bird then said to god, what r u an asshole too.. birds will survive a flood ......... the end...

Yep! They only floaty things that don't scare me are airplanes and kites!
