Russell Brand
Name one point when humanity as societies ever shared with the less fortunate. Not talking about individuals, but societies. The poor and needy were always trampled into the dust by the ones calling the shots.
I believe capitalism has brought about an imbalance where the ability to amass wealth is far in excess of anything possible before it. Half the worlds population, 3 1/2 billion people have as much money as the top 85 richest people, and the owners of WalMart have more wealth than 42% of Americans.

Those figures are incredible. The richest in society (the top 1%) have 100 times more wealth than the millionaires in the top 10%. Poverty could be eradicated overnight if capitalism were dismantled. Instead we're manipulated with fear and mass indoctrination to support it.

Those who argue the modern wealth disparity is unprecedented should consider that some historian estimated the richest private citizen in world's history was Marcus Lucinius Crassus, one of Julius Caesar's colleagues in the first triumvirate. He was calculated to own 1/12 of the total wealth of the entire world. In today's terms he would be worth 5 trillion dollars, or ~70 times richer than the richest man in the world today.

You get no argument from me about that.

I despise Russell Brand, and it pisses me off when he gets something right. Thanks a heap, Frodo.
Mind, he's a steaming great hypocrite, even about this. He wants wealth redistribution on a massive scale, but I don't see him doling out his millions to the desperately poor.

He's giving away the money from the work he's doing now, including his book to social projects etc to combat inequality. He says he was hated when he was poor for opposing inequality as much as he is now. I don't see why you have a problem with him articulating the problem.
I didn't used to like him. I don't really get his humour. He's been consistently and selflessly spot on about this and a huge number of young people are inspired by him. The media is constantly crucifying him for telling the uncomfortable truth about them.

Total world wealth is 300 trillion(mostly in real estate) not 60 trillion.

I would say that the Roman Empire was no where near as pervasive as modern capitalism, which is pretty much global. Historically, no previous economic imbalance had threatened the planets ecology as the present imbalance does.
