In context, the best one I got was many many moons ago.
As I kid I, along with about a half dozen or so of my friends, were super big into D&D. Most birthdays and Christmases involved D&D based presents.
One Christmas this new 'official' D&D computer game was released (don't remember which one it was). All of us wanted one because all of us were lucky enough to have a computer in the house. (This was back when no one had multiple computers, and some didn't even have one computer yet.) It even had 'network playing' available, so we could play from home.
Well the parents all decided, instead of the computer game, they went to a game/comic shop and bought D&D gear outfits. Like, each one was a set of clothing and items based on the classes.... a fighter, a cleric, a thief, a wizard, a ranger, etc... the kind of thing you couldn't buy today because it had enough small parts to make a meal and plenty of things to put an eye out if you tried.
Of course we were a bit disappointed, but when spring came we grabbed our stuff and went to an undeveloped area in town. It was filled with meadows, a small forested area, a little lake and some rolling hills.
Playing outside in that 'wilderness', pretending, and just using our imagination blew away any game we could have played on the computer.

When I was 15 or so, I got Visual Basic 3 from my parents for Christmas, and finally had a rad software development thingy for Windows. Much more fun than doing c and basic in the dos box. That was a great time, christmas cookies, good food, going for walks in the snow, and lots of coding. When I was 12 I got my first real amp and two kits of diy speakers, and my uncle helped me cut the wood for the speaker cabinets. Great times too.

My dad used to make a big effort. One year I woke up surrounded by a floor full of assembled small toys. I'm still amazed at the thought of it.

The best present I ever got was the tiger tank slippers Kichi knitted for my birthday last year. The amount of effort she put into them was incredible.
And the best present I ever gave was the first motorbike I bought her.
If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.

We always gave my Dad a bag of mixed nuts for special occasions.
One year I took a package of craft eyes (small white disks with a clear bubble over them and a little black bead, pupil, inside) and glued two on each nut. They watched him while being consumed.
He loved it and kept them for a long time.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat?

I'm quite torn between two christmas gifts I received. Both I received when I was quite little. Either it was the toy Aston Martin modelled after the Bond car of Goldfinger, which had a real ejector seat, or it was the Lotus Emma Peel drove around in the Avengers. Both I remember most vividly to this day.
I'm not quite sure what's the best I have ever given. Probably paying off the mortgage on my parent's house, since my dad had to get through with a mini pension.

An Aston Martin was in that treasure trove that Christmas! Ejector seat, rear bullet shield that popped up behind the rest seats. Didn't it have guns that popped out the front too? Awesome toy.
Best present idea for our kids were knitted socks to hang on all our doors. We put the smallest stuff in them, like small coins, a piece of fruit, one chocolate coin... you get the idea. The kids go nuts with excitement every year for them. They have to see what we got too. Never ceases to amaze me.

I just thought of the best gift I ever gave! I surprised my mom (on purpose- she never would have done it otherwise) with paragliding. We drove down to the Torrey Pines gliderport. She thought we might be golfing, since it's right next to Torrey Pines golf course; I told her "no". She said, "are we having a picnic?" I said "no". She said, "are we jumping off a cliff?" I nodded and said, "I've already paid for it. If you don't go, I'm going twice."
I could hear my mom sobbing and screaming about how much she loved it before she was fifty feet above the landing site on the cliff. She still tells everyone who will listen about it. She's cute
