- The latest full-year music sales stats out of Norway show that the Scandinavian country’s revenues from recorded music were flat in 2014.
But the results of a recent IFPI survey in the territory bring optimistic news for the future, MBW has learnt.
A countrywide survey in December 2014 showed that just 4% of Norwegians under 30 years still used illegal file-sharing platforms to get hold of music.
Even better for the worldwide industry, less than 1% of people under 30 years said that file-sharing was their main source of obtaining music.

Compare that to a 2009 survey by the IFPI and GramArt, which showed that 70% of the population under 30 years who had internet access were illegally downloading music.

The reason for this near-complete erosion of piracy in the region is clear: young people now have a better option.
75% of Norway’s recorded music industry income now comes from streaming services such as Spotify and Tidal/WiMP.
The IFPI’s December survey concluded that 80% of people under 30 in the country chose streaming services as their primary source of music.
IFPI Norge MD Marte Thorsby (pictured) commented, “We are now offering services that are both better and more user-friendly than illegal platforms… In [the past] five years, we have virtually eliminated illegal file sharing in the music industry.”

They're compensating the artists, exactly as I had suggested, and that contributes to the "optimistic news" mentioned in your article.

The data must be accurate because there is no way somebody that steals music would lie to a pollster. The article also leaves out the fact that Norway passed broad anti-piracy legislation in the summer of 2013 that loosened the requirements for trade groups to monitor file sharing sites for copyright infringement.

Ah, the abysmal fail of libertarianism. Ideally, it's not a bad idea, but it fails because it greatly underestimeats the power of human greed.

Well, both libertarians and Marxists got that wrong, to be fair.
But -- it would seem that the power of greed would drive an industry group to monitor for copyright violations on its own. I mean, ASCAP and BMI do here in America, with no compulsion from the government.
Puzzling.

I'm unsure why you prefaced this post with "Really?", though. We're in agreement. The main part I disagreed with was the end part of Cato's post: "I don't see how any of it legitimizes theft." If that's the way that you look at it, I don't see how you can come up with solutions to the problem!
