Is it okay for Christians to post here?

RE: Is it okay for Christians to post here?
I think Evolutionist is great term...it's someone who studies evolution.

As for a Darwinian....it's someone who believes in natural selection which incidentally was invented by Charles Darwin. Evolution is founded on Darwinism...evolutionary 'theory' has been greatly improved since Darwin...but the point is that Darwinism is where evolutionary theory comes from.

PS: Why does Evolutionist and Evolutionism mean a way to accept evolution as a 'religion'? How does it mean that? Doesn't Evolutionism mean the study of evolution and Evolutionist mean someone who studies evolution?

Hi

I left this forum because it seemed like I was going to be prohibited from using the term Evolutionist. Is that still the case? If not then I'd like to come back and start posting again. Thanks

I think the official title is evolutionary biologist

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionism - Seems to be a term made up by people who cannot understand something that has no dogma, and thus must label it for themselves so it fits in their own small world. While it sounds like the logical word (and may in fact be) it appears that the meaning has been changed to an incorrect one. Implying that evolution is faith based and dogmatic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionary_biology - An actual title given to those that study actual evolution.

I don't think that we would ban you for saying 'evolutionist'

But to be accurate, and evolutionist is One who holds the doctrine of evolution, either in biology or in metaphysics. Darwin.

What do you mean by the term?

You can use the word "Evolutionist" as long as you can take people like myself constantly asking you what an "Evolutionist" is and why you don't respect people by using their correct titles. It's just a really childish thing to do in a civilized forum.

Actually, no. I cannot take people like you whining about as basic scientific term as http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/evolutionist

I find it amusing that you actually believe that your attempt at calling me childish would do anything except make me think less of you.

Folks - The only way Adrian can take such a position is to ignore the scientific literature as if texts and scholarly works are non-existant. E.g. famous books on evolution such as What Evolution Is use the term throughout. This book was written by the world renowned scholar [i]Ernst Mary
which use the term evolutionist throughout it. Adrian is of the opinion that if he says its not used often enough then it will be truel.

The term is also used throughout the academic community contrary to what Adrian is trying to lead you to believe. E.g. http://www.news.ucdavis.edu/search/news_...so?id=4873

So no Adrian. I won't put up with you or people with your attitude. It's fortunate that you and those with your attitude aren't dominant on scientific forums or circles.

I was right the first time. This is not a good place to discuss anything. I'll leave permanently now.

All this fuss over a little word.

If you are going to leave just over that then perhaps this isn't the best place for you. Debates can get quite, let's say, enthusiastic, here and if someone is not prepared to have certain things they say challenged then maybe they haven't really got what it takes for a proper debate.

Also, I suspect that the term evolutionist is more popular in America than it is here in the U.K.

Personally I don't mind as I know what you mean but there will be others who dislike the term and so, as the English language is so rich, perhaps a substitute would be a good idea.

This way we could actually get passed this little problem and hear what you have to say.

As an answer to the name of thread: Yes, it is ok for christians to write on this forum, of course. I have never acctully heared the word evolutionist before, if it means what I think it means- That it refers to people believing in evolution. Then exactly everyone in my country is evolutionists, even priests.

I have found numerous errors with Merrian Webster over the years, and in England the dictionary isn't used at all. The word "Evolutionist" is not found in any Cambridge dictionaries:

I called you childish because that was what you were being; I didn't care what you thought of me at the end of it.

Perhaps it is quoted in some scientific work, and as I said the word has been used by scientists to attempt to make it seem less insulting (as the word gay was used by homosexuals). Famous books like "Evolution - What the fossils say and why it matters (Prothero)" do not use the word, and actually devote whole chapters covering the creation/evolution "controversy" and how the word arose.

I find it amusing that the one example you used was a press release of a university. Press releases are generally written by university administration, not biologists. Nor is this press release peer reviewed, so it is hardly scientific.

Perhaps, but this isn't a scientific forum. This is a forum for discussing atheism, and we don't like words that imply we "believe" in Evolution as some kind of faith.

Well that didn't last long.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.
