Why marry?

RE: Why marry?
I wonder if the higher divorce rate for Evangelicals has to do with different motivations for marriage, and mate selection process?
...it is common knowledge that the upper third, centered in Flagstaff, is Alta Arizona; the lower third, centered in Tucson, is Baja Arizona; and the middle third, centered in Phoenix, is Caca Arizona. Simple as ABC...

RE: Why marry?
Most of the population believes in god, not a good argument in my opinion. In my country many people get married before they die because of inheritances and other legal benefits

RE: Why marry?
We've had a successful an happy marriage for over 20 years. However, we didn't marry young, we didn't marry to satisfy Jesus, to have guilt free Jesus sanctioned sex, or to satisfy family expectations. We also already knew we could live together harmoniously and that it made us happy to be together, and that we were physically compatible. I have to wonder how many Evangelicals really know anything at all about the real person their spouse is, know what they are like to live with, and if they have compatible physical tastes and drives?

RE: Why marry?
Evangelical Christians make some pretty serious flaws when choosing to get married.

1) They don't find out if they're sexually compatible until it's too late.
2) They don't know what it's like to live with the other person.
3) They get married before most males learn how not to be douches. (27-29)
4) You usually need to date for longer than the average evangelical courting period in order to discover how to move past another person's annoying idiosyncrasies.
5) There is a higher occurrence of repressed homosexuality.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

6. They're taught that sex is wicked and evil their entire lives up until the day they marry and then expected not to serious sexual issues.

PS kudos to 1-5

I think the main reason cited was that many evangelicals are virgins waiting for marriage to have sex, and they ended up marrying way too young. Another fallacy of course, that one must be married in order to have sex. Congrats on your 20+ years... Smile

RE: Why marry?
I think of part of the problem in my mind as a sort of Fairy Tale syndrome, where super religious young people marry their prince/princess, then wake up with a real person. When you are dating, especially for a short time, you tend to only see each other at your best, most groomed, and on your best behavior. You don't really know someone until you've woken up with them when they have grumpy whiny death flu, with stuff coming out of every orifice.

I would say this is true for everyone, not simply religious people. The whole idea of the perfect mate is largely unrealistic. Human beings are much more complex than swans. Even if two people are "perfect" for each other at 20, expecting they will be the same at 60 is folly. People grow and change. The chances of any two people growing and changing at the same rate and in the same way is remote.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

My thought exactly. Instead we could turn the thread into a psychological reconstruction of how someone as harebrained as the OP finds themselves on a forum such as this creating these posts. My theory: he probably just got dumped by his girlfriend, one of many in a string who stick around for diminishing lengths of time before fleeing as quick as possible, each of whom's personality in every proceeding relationship was more vacuous than the last, as the more dignified women in his social circle came to see him for the d-bag he is. Upon the most recent break-up, he realized that the last woman he found moderately attractive could no longer put up with his idiocy, and so in a spree fueled by Four Loko and the depression of discovering how worthless his life is, he wandered on here to lash out at the only remaining people that he might be able to engage.

That's the story I'm sticking to, anyway.
