RE: (western) classical music discussion
Min,

what's your take on the authorship question if you have one?

I just finnished (sic) a big Sibelius Kick, listening mostly to the Symphonies (as recorded by Colin Davis) and the Tone Poems (conductor: Osmo Vanska):

I'm now listening to the Grieg/Schumann Piano Concertos (recorded by Stephen Bishop Kovacevich):

Next week, I'll start listening to the best of Debussy!
* Suite Bergamasque (Bartanan), part of a CD with works by other composers.
* Images/Etudes (Bavouzet)
* Preludes (Aimard)
* Orchestral Works (a recent reissue by various conductors, the best of which being Karajan)
* Pelleas and Melisande (Karajan)

Surprisingly, even in his most self-absorbed era, Herbert von Karajan can still put out some heavily acclaimed (if unconventional) sets of Debussy.

To be fair, it actually suits him. He's a great composer, don't get me wrong, but his plots are often just DUMB. I mean, a man has sex with his sister, and thus gives birth to the great hero Siegfried, who, despite being likely the greatest, most iconic hero of all opera, is so dumb he has to learn what fear is.

I'm just saying, there's a reason most other opera composers don't write their own libretti.

In fairness, he's a great composer of music. And now, Georg Solti creating history with his recording of "Siegfried's Funeral March" from his great Ring cycle.

Interesting - I've been reading about it lately, now I should listen to it!

Somehow I find the sounds of this clavichord very endearing. Its capability for vibrato gives this a strangely "romantic" sound akin to a guitar.
