Keep in mind that atheists who have been on the net a while have a lot of negative experiences with theists. Atheists who are new to the net are frequently shocked and somewhat traumatized by some theists' bad behavior.
For better or worse, until we get to know you, all we have are stereotypes justified by long experience. Some are less inclined to charity than others. If the above bothers you, well, it's the world that religion has constructed, and this is our tiny little corner of it.
The situations are of course not identical, but there are points of similarity with a white guy walking into a family of black people (as I have recently done). If you don't want to piss off everyone in the room, you have to bend over backwards to check your privilege, and you'll piss off some people in the room no matter what you do.
