I think this is what makes it the "inner circle" that I mentioned earlier. Normally people around here are respectable around people they don't know, so swearing becomes a sign of knowing somebody on a personal level. But there has to be that feeling out period, otherwise if you come out guns a blazin, that makes you look like a person of poor judgment and someone who doesn't know how to navigate social situations.
Of course age is a factor. You can skip the feeling out period if you're a crotchety old fart, and you won't lose any respect points.
