Your Dad reminds me quite a lot of my Dad
Mine was such a well educated and intelligent man on most things, but for some reason he really seemed to struggle grasping some basic shit about racism, sexuality, why religion is so bad, womens' rights. He definitely wasn't new man to say the least. It did bother me sometimes, especially when he said things about gay people. Two of his finest quotes about gays;
"Well poofs choose to be poofs"
*In response to a news report about lesbian rights* "I don't see what rights I have that lesbians don't."
I love him but it was pointless trying to discuss anything with him, he wouldn't hear it. Anything that wasn't in his comfortable little conservative bubble was "political correctness", even if what you said wasn't particularly radical or revolutionary. It was the fact that he didn't understand stuff about racism that got me most, especially considering he could have easily and probably was considered "brown" or "mixed race" by some people.

"Ironically like the nativist far-Right, which despises multiculturalism, but benefits from its ideas of difference to scapegoat the other and to promote its own white identity politics; these postmodernists, leftists, feminists and liberals also use multiculturalism, to side with the oppressor, by demanding respect and tolerance for oppression characterised as 'difference', no matter how intolerable." - Maryam Namazie
