As far as the usefulness of IQ tests go - it's my opinion that they're really only useful for quantifying proficiency in certain types of thinking. I took a test that was given as part of a postgrad research project, and the results were quite comprehensive (i.e. although an IQ number was provided, there were more nuanced scores given for different types of problem-solving).
In my view, it's not a predictor of academic or professional success, but rather just a score of how well an individual solves certain classes of problems.
