Cath, it really, really sounds like you just don't want to have anyone blame the repressive sects of Christianity for the things that grow out of them.
While liberal Christianity of any sort may produce relatively normal, healthy children and adults, fundamentalism doesn't. Not unless they escape. You see the stories time and again, and you hear them straight from the horse's mouth. They're abusive and degrading, specifically structured so that those who are in power and misuse it don't actually get in trouble.
