Right, yeah. My pet theory at the moment is that they were slinging an agenda, writing a story, but decided to throw in a supposedly real person to add some credibility. I've read a bit about ideas of them "humanising" other mythologies, rewriting them as a man. So this kind of brings the historical and the mythical Jesus together.
It's always going to be a mystery. The thing is, even if the gospel authors fully intended to write about a real person, they had no first hand sources about the person so it's conceivable that person wasn't real anyway. Or perhaps more likely, he was already an out-of-proportion legend based on a teeny little man. But really, they didn't know for sure. They couldn't. Figuring out their intentions is the hardest part, and they were clearly happy making shit up so I certainly don't trust their integrity.
