The consent argument is totally valid, it's just inconsistent with all the other ways in which it is socially acceptable to violate an animal's consent, and not for their benefit.
To me, the question of consent is, "Would this person/animal agree with what I am doing if they could understand the situation as well as I do?" This covers times when medical intervention is necessary and so on, and arguably euthanasia. Self-defence is obviously an exception too.
