These observations are difficult. A recent technique is to find a massive galaxy directly between us and a potential object VERY far away. If the geometry is just right, the intermediate galaxy will amplify and magnify the distant object enough for us to study it. The technique can magnify by a factor of 10X to 20X.
Statistics indicate the number of times this technique can be used will be small, unfortunately. If we want to look at more galaxies like this we will need a bigger boat telescope.
