What I'm saying is that he's insane and would be insane even if he was not religious. He is religious, so his delusions and the voices in his head took the form of 'God' and 'demons', but if he was not religious, his delusions might have been something else... like aliens, for example. Religion did not make him crazy. He is crazy with or without the religion.
Or... at least... possibly. Maybe I'm wrong and his religion did make him insane, but I don't think that's likely. I think it's more likely that he suffers from a severe case of schizophrenia and that his strong religious beliefs influenced his delusions. Without those strong religious beliefs, the schizophrenia would remain, but the delusions would be different.
