The writings from Josephus aren't very credible, from what I've heard.
Let's not forget Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate. These people were not just willing to die, they proactively took their lives because they believed in a better afterlife. Compare that to Christians who say they believe but do everything in their power to avoid death. If willingness to die is the litmus test of true faith then I know of no true believers today or even last week.
