Like all words, it really depends on the context. Like all words, it is a thing that humans made up and defined.
In general, it's a word that describes one or more fictional, supernatural beings that at one time or another have been said to be responsible for creating and/or governing existence.
Beyond that, God typically devolves into some nebulous "higher power" or "supreme consciousness" that hides in the parts of science and rhetoric that can't be proven/disproven and/or haven't been discovered yet. It hovers between being an evasive linguistic device and a misplaced burden of proof built on an argument from ignorance, aka "The God of the Gaps."
