Also beware the risk of toxoplasmosis if you do get pregnant, especially with troubled cats who may have problems keeping themselves clean. My flatmate took in a rescue cat and it would jump everywhere onto work surfaces and leave brown stains around the place. It had really long fur. She explained that it was because it was a troubled cat but that didn't make me feel better about the health risk (or my cat allergy for that matter). Luckily I was out of there about a month later. But make sure you get your husband to clean out the cat litter and wash your surfaces if you do get pregnant.
