Yeah this is essentially a World War, but it's not countries vs countries. It's countries vs idealogy. This is even more dangerous because how do you eradicate an idealogy?
I read a report that estimated ISIS only has about 35,000 troops. By comparison the Middle East countries have over 4 million armed troops at their disposal, but even they cannot eradicate ISIS on the ground. Why? Because while there are certainly the militant violent outspoken members we see on these threat videos, there are far more supporters of ISIS who are average every day citizens who will just decide one day to come to work or go to a mall with a bomb strapped to themselves. They blend in as average people but they have a particular mindset and do not fear death, that is impossible to prevent and a deadly combination.
This is not a traditional World War that has a sequence of events leading up to it and an ending. This is a perpetual war that honestly may never end.

We are not made happy by what we acquire but by what we appreciate.
