I think the better description is the ancients were in general stupid, the problem is they were not reliably stupid.
Some did. On a percentage basis not very many. When you start breaking them up by the various sects ( which were later deemed to be heretical by the proto-orthodox who re-wrote history to suit their needs) the odds are that no one group was very large at all.
In order to study the matter you must first totally dismiss the bullshit story which they put forward and there are a lot of people who'd rather castrate themselves than admit that it is all a tissue of lies.
