When we are arguing about ideas we identify with, then any argument is not really just an intellectual point, but an attack and defense on one's view of self.
If my whole family have taught me to be a "God-fearing Christian," and someone comes along and says, "Use your brain, obviously the Bible is full of shit," then will I simply disagree? No. My whole reality is being questioned.
Should people change their world views easily? No-- it takes a lot of mental effort, and perhaps even a complete intellectual/emotional breakdown, to complete rewrite one's world view. Only when there is just no place to hide will most people even consider that their view of reality is flawed.
