Hands-down the worst Star Wars film yet.
I'll reserve judgement until I see the film, which probably won't be until next week. I find the above statement very difficult to believe in a universe where Attack of the Clones exists. Your assessment also seems to be in the minority (has no bearing on the veracity of your assessment). I anticipate this number will come down; however, the film stands at 95% for top critics at Rotten Tomatoes.
Your special effects comment is a little discouraging. I don't mind special effects at all and was hopeful based on reports that the overuse of CGI in the first three episodes had been scaled back. You didn't comment on performances. I can't imagine this being worse than some of those delivered in the first three episodes.
It will be difficult for me to maintain objectivity as Star Wars is so much more than just a movie and is not a cultural phenomenon because of its critical acclaim. I have vivid memories of my father taking me and my brothers to see the original on it's opening weekend. I later kept my own kids out of school on opening day for each of the prequels. In fact, the only reason I'm not going tomorrow and waiting until next week is to take my daughter and grandson for tradition's sake. She called me to demand the arrangement. How many movie franchises, critically acclaimed or not, have the power to demand adherence to multi-generational tradition?
I look forward to chatting about the details later.
