Oh right, telling the sun to stop so the army could finish killing off the routers. Well this was a time when people thought the sun revolved around the earth, instead of the other way around. So it would be no big deal to just have it hang in the air for as much time as Joshua needed.
Of course now that we know the world revolves around the sun, it means god would have to stop the world from spinning. There goes all life on the planet. If it's a figure of expression, I don't know what it's supposed to mean. I'm pretty sure it was meant to be taken literally, and the authors just didn't know how the sun and earth really worked.
