There is an old observation that says 'in order to lie effectively you have to know the truth.' I don't think they believe their snake oil is a miracle cure for anything. It merely fattens their bank account by relieving suckers of their money.
That probably does apply to evangelical ministers who preach on TV. But it can't apply to those who get sucked into apologetics non-professionally.
To me there is a parallel between the way some gangs make new members kill someone and the way some religious institutions insist that members go forth and convert.
