I don't know much about him, but it sounds like a coping mechanism. It sounds like he went through many horrible experiences. The mind does what it has to do to keep you going, even if it means allowing in a level of delusion. Even a sceptic can break under severe pressure, if he was one.

I was going to mention this, and it seems like a good place here. For any of you who watch Eastenders, there's a really interesting and frankly quite dark storyline going at the moment. Hide tags to avoid spoiling and/or boredom.

Stacy has bipolar depression and has had to cope with a lot, including now giving birth to a baby which isn't from her boyfriend. It's from her best friend's husband. The pressure of keeping this secret and various other things, plus Dot Branning preaching to her about Jesus, causes her to crack. She now believes her baby is the son of god. Yes, seriously, this is what's going on in the program. Religion is bad enough and able to delude those in sound mind, but it's a terrible trap for people who are seriously mentally ill. Of course, the mythology surrounding her suddenly crept in following her break, she wasn't interested in Christianity before.

I found it funny because even Dot who is super religious was finding her ramblings to be "crazy". I know it's a fictional show, but it was eerily familiar having heard many extremely religious people talk.
