I just wonder if you could help me understand a certain "attitude" I notice from a lot of atheists, including Hitchens, Dawkins and other luminaries.
Not all atheists are this way, but it seems there is a presumptuous certainty from a lot of them.
Marketing. They want to sell books and increase their brand, or whatever else goes on in that world.
To do that in our society, you act like a dick. That gets you clickbait headlines on CNN. It gets you interviews on the tv programming. Name recognition. It also makes you a lightning rod for criticism, which means that others will then come to your defense. All revolving around you.
So, money and fame is the answer for the 'famous' atheist attitudes. As for the non-famous, it's probably just emulation. Society takes it's cues from famous/popular people. They are dicks because they think that's how you're supposed to behave, and don't realize that the famous dicks are doing it to manipulate people for their personal gain. Although, I suppose they could just be dicks, and be rewarded for being dicks by society. Tough to say for sure.
