Apparently she did.  There is no implication that the parents thought of it first.

...other than she's 11 years old! And even if she came to this conclusion without any influence whatsoever from her parents, society-at-large etc. so what? She's 11 years old! The responsible thing to do is to say "That's nice dear, now have your life-saving treatment and forget about the nonsense.".

Unlike in this case.
