In Ireland they write out to you. As regards taking the plunge, try and have as stressless a day as possible beforehand, the first time I tried to donate my blood pressure was too high, was having a bad day at college and the extra worry of getting pricked just sent it over the top.
Also drink plenty of water all day and eat something shortly before donating. And if you can have a nice pint of stout afterwards (when I donated down in Cork, I used always get a can of Murphy's afterwards as I was living up the road from the hospital).
