Or is it just an anomaly with neither negative or positive benefits towards the hosts survival.

I don't have the first clue about what kind of evolutionary advantage having different blood types imparts on an animal, but I know that different animals have different blood types - in other words, animals don't just have the ABO system for their own blood.
