No, not at all. Speedfan monitors every available heat core, and it shows you the temperature that everything is reporting at. If you leave on the automatic setting, it will still crank up the fan to full speed if necessary. I don't even bother to use it when I'm gaming, because all my fans will be roaring away. But if I'm recording audio or leaving the comp on overnight (it's in my bedroom), it's an absolute must-have.
I wouldn't bother getting too hacky with it: just leave "automatic" on, and turn down your CPU and GPU fans to 0, and they will right away go up to a sensible (and guaranteed quieter unless you're gaming) setting.
Speedfan also gives you very useful info: how hard your CPUs are working, the fitness of your hard drives, etc. Try it (or google it) and you'll see it's a must have
