Assault rifles have been the most heavily restricted type of firearm for nearly 100 years. You can own one, but their production is federally restricted, their sale is federally restricted, and their permitting is federally restricted. They're also fantastically expensive. It takes more than soundness of mine to get ahold of one and if you do..you will be subject to recurring ATF inspections. Possession of an assault rifle without conforming to all of the above will lead to a felony charge for -someone- along the chain of possession...and forfeiture of the firearm.
Not that it means much in relation to our gun problem. Assault rifles aren't our problem (might be all that regulation, might be the cost, might be that they just aren't suitable, probably all three and other factors). Rifles, taken all together as a group to avoid confusion as to what is and is not an assault rifle, barely register as a blip on the radar. You're more likely to be beaten to death than killed with a rifle of -any- kind, in this country.
